KH FST: Land
Keeping the original commentary for this FST, originally made back in 2008. I have a newer Riku FST that's also done, but I'm not allowed to post it until I finish the Riku Replica one I'm working on :P

This is an FST that has been many months in the making. It started out as just a little collection of songs I was listening to back in March (at least, that was the earliest post I found about it!), and has since then grew and become something I really like and feel accomplished finishing.
This FST basically follows Riku chronologically through the course of all three Kingdom Hearts games. I attempted to make it as gen and as close to the games as I could, but my pairing biases, both slash and het, are probably going to peek through. Also, while some artists or bands have more than one song on here, the songs were chosen because they fit Riku, and the bands are what feel like very "Riku" bands, to me (this is so hard to word :)). All cover art is by RubyD.

Land: A Riku FST
1. Over The Rainbow - Me First and the Gimme Gimmes
Somewhere over the rainbow way up high

A punk cover of the Wizard of Oz song. Whether he wants to admit it or not, Riku's got a few similarities to Dorothy from Kansas. He spends his childhood wanting to leave and see new sights, and then spends a good chunk of the games just wishing he could go back and be with everyone he cares about.

And cultural revolution right away begun!
From all the tables of contents that Mother Earth provides

And I would visit you a lot
Another song about a teenager from the Midwest. Riku opens the door and chooses the darkness, Kairi goes missing, and Sora gets the Keyblade. Before he has the chance to reunite with Sora and Kairi, Riku falls into the hands of Maleficent andAnsem Xehanort's Heartless "Ansem". Unlike most of the other songs on this FST, I see this one as being sung by "Ansem" rather than Riku.

Maleficent's helped Riku to find Kairi, but she's an unresponsive, lifeless doll. Sora seems happy ignoring him to be with his new friends, so Riku puts all his efforts into finding Kairi's heart. Can be seen as Riku/Kairi.
5. Get It Faster - Jimmy Eat World

No nothing ever shames me
Don't wanna thing from you

I don't care if you're angry
I should've thought things through

But not getting an answer

Cheating gets it faster
Sora won't join up with him, and Kairi still doesn't have her heart. While on Captain Hook's ship in Neverland, Riku gains the power to control the Heartless. But still, using power over Heartless to take Sora's shadow away and make it fight him might be considered cheating by some people.

Broadway is dark tonight
A little bit weaker than you used to be
Broadway is dark tonight
See the young man sitting
In the old man’s bar

I know they been missin’ round here
Even after all that happened in Neverland, everything continues to go wrong. Sora's still fighting him, Kairi won't respond, Destiny Islands is destroyed, and Maleficent's still creepy. Getting Kairi back to Hollow Bastion without a vessel is hard on the heart, and Riku starts to get an inkling that the darkness might be more dangerous than advertised. If Get It Faster was the high, Broadway is the crash afterwards.
7. Time To Dance - Panic! At The Disco
Well, she's not bleeding on the ballroom floor
Just for the attention.
Cause that's just ridiculously odd.

Fed up with Sora, Riku takes the Keyblade from him. After saying some harsh words, he also takes Donald and Goofy away with him, but not before throwing a toy wooden sword at Sora's feet. Everything he does and says in front of the Rising Falls is done to cause as much hurt towards Sora as possible. Can be seen as Riku/Kairi versus Sora/Kairi, and/or Riku/Sora gone horribly wrong.
8. Shed My Skin - Alter Bridge

I'm searching for something but found less than nothing
Riku thought that he'd won, but when Sora's heart is stronger, Riku loses the Keyblade again. Left with no other options, Riku submits.

I'm afflicted, you're addicted,

I'm on the edge,

You're clear - as a heavy lead curtain
But "Ansem" never told Riku that he'd be taking over forcibly, with Riku losing any control he ever had over himself. This isn't what Riku wanted, and after Sora becomes a Heartless, all he can do is hold off "Ansem" long enough for Kairi and the others to get away.
10. Help! - The Beatles
When I was younger, so much younger than today,
I never needed anybody's help in anyway.
But now these days are gone, I'm not so self assured,
Now I find I've changed my mind, I've opened up the doors.
Help me if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being 'round.

Sora's defeated "Ansem", but can't close the door to Kingdom Hearts on his own. Riku, wanting to make up for all that he's done, helps close the door from the inside. While in the Realm of Darkness, he gets some much-needed help and advice from a mouse who just happens to be a king. Or is that a king who just happens to be a mouse?

You're not very nice
Somehow, Riku finds himself in the basement of Castle Oblivion. Among many other strange things there, there's a fake version of himself walking around, acting like a complete brat. Riku and the Replica can't stand each other, can they? But as the Replica is dying, Riku thinks that their hearts will probably go to the same place, after all. This is a violent parody-cover of the original song, which is supposed to be a love song, I think.
12. If You Can't Leave It Be, Might As Well Make It Bleed - Dashboard Confessional
What you've found sure upset you
Never saw it coming did you?
Its easy to be surprised with both your eyes sewn closed
Handled with great precision, another thoughtless execution

There's something better wrong with you
Riku fighting against the Nobodies in Oblivion, especially Zexion. Zexion can do all the smoke and mirrors he wants, but when Naminé helps him see the man behind the curtain, Riku is able to stand up for himself and start winning things.
13. This Is How I Disappear - My Chemical Romance
To un-explain the unforgivable,
Drain all the blood and give the kids a show.
By streetlight this dark night,
A séance down below.
There're things that I have done,
You never should ever know!

Words I thought I'd choke on figure out.

Riku finally faces "Ansem", and manages to defeat him, refusing to let the ghost have power over him any longer.

These moments are brief

You must lose your mind in order for to find it
And sometimes you've just got to fall
So you can see the bottom
Or you'll never know what's holding you up

Choosing to stay awake while Sora sleeps, Riku takes the path towards Dawn.
15. Blind - Train

Nothing is wrong but everything takes too long
Hey by the way, when I fell to your wayside
Did I crash or just slide

So this is how it feels to get a little older
And some would say wiser
We know what that means, maybe not
Well maybe that's what that means, maybe not
But as the long year draws to a close, Riku's lost his memories of Sora and is trying to deal with the "Ansem" in his heart again. After coming to Naminé and DiZ in an Organization coat, blindfolded, he learns that bringing Sora's Nobody back will make Sora wake up. But can he really fight and win against this boy that looks so much like Sora? Can be seen as Riku/Roxas.
16. Runaway Train - Soul Asylum
Can you help me remember how to smile?
Make it somehow all seem worthwhile
How on earth did I get so jaded?
Life's mystery seems so faded
I can go where no one else can go
I know what no one else knows
Here I am just a-drownin' in the rain
With a ticket for a runaway train
And everything seems cut and dried,

Somehow I just don't believe it

A little out of touch, a little insane
Riku loses in his fight against Roxas, and starts to ponder doing something he dreads doing. He has to weigh Sora against Roxas against himself. Is this Riku/Sora or Riku/Roxas? Maybe it's both.
17. Settle For Satin - Alkaline Trio
it's not so much a storm,
but just a cloud that lives inside of me
he doesn't stir so easily these days,
but when he wakes he goes the distance
in a marathon of days too long
open containers that sing songs,

i guess we only settle in to what we know
i guess we always settle in, and we know.
that there is comfort in a world
where darkness is the only thing we see
and cold is all we have to breathe
where affectations keep us company,
where the lies we tell to the eyes that roll in doubt
are somehow out of our control
But in the end, there isn't really a question as to what Riku's going to do. And Riku chooses to use his dark power to defeat Roxas and help Sora wake up, losing his own physical form in the process. He takes on the form of the person he dislikes most in exchange, "Ansem", the person who reminds him most of his own failings in the past.
18. Lighthouse - The Hush Sound
There is a storm in the distance

There is a lighthouse five hundred yards down

Three ghosts in a lighthouse
While DiZ just laughs at him, Naminé is actually concerned for Riku and his well-being. Roxas gets put into Twilight Town, and Riku and Naminé wait for Sora to wake up. This one is sung by Naminé. Can be seen as Riku/Naminé.

Lonely and dreaming of the west coast
I don't want to be your downtime
I don't want to be your stupid game

Riku has been willing to help DiZ concerning Roxas and Sora, but he has to draw the line somewhere. He's not willing to participate in the revenge towards the Nobodies, and he's not willing to be cruel towards Naminé and Roxas. Even though he looks like "Ansem" now, it doesn't mean he has to act like it.
20. Angels Would Fall - Melissa Etheridge
And the doubts that have surrounded me

After Sora wakes up, Riku contents himself with helping here and there, but never revealing himself to Sora. Though Sora calls out to Riku on more than one occasion, Riku is ashamed by the things he's done and by his new appearance. Can be seen as Riku/Sora.

In The World That Never Was, Riku fights off Saïx, so that Kairi and Naminé can go free. When he's going to leave the girls, Naminé stops him for Kairi. When he's going to leave Kairi and Sora, Kairi stops him to show Sora Riku's true form. Can be seen as both Riku/Naminé and Riku/Kairi.

Riku thought he didn't want to be found, but Sora is just so happy to see him that he breaks down in tears. Riku tries to tell Sora that he's done horrible things and has been lying to himself, but Sora just makes funny faces and refuses to let Riku mope about it. Even though it's one of the only Goo Goo Dolls songs I think of as sung to Riku rather than by him, I cannot say enough how much I like this song. Can be seen as Riku/Sora.

Finally back home in Destiny Islands, Riku is grateful for the friends he has, friends who never gave up on him and who are the most important people in the world to him. He knows that some bad things have happened in the past, but what's really important is the person he is now and the things he has learned. Can be seen as SoRiKai OT3.

Somehow, Riku finds himself in the basement of Castle Oblivion. Among many other strange things there, there's a fake version of himself walking around, acting like a complete brat. Riku and the Replica can't stand each other, can they? But as the Replica is dying, Riku thinks that their hearts will probably go to the same place, after all. This is a violent parody-cover of the original song, which is supposed to be a love song, I think.

There's something better wrong with you
Riku fighting against the Nobodies in Oblivion, especially Zexion. Zexion can do all the smoke and mirrors he wants, but when Naminé helps him see the man behind the curtain, Riku is able to stand up for himself and start winning things.

To un-explain the unforgivable,
Drain all the blood and give the kids a show.

Riku finally faces "Ansem", and manages to defeat him, refusing to let the ghost have power over him any longer.

These moments are brief

And sometimes you've just got to fall

Choosing to stay awake while Sora sleeps, Riku takes the path towards Dawn.

Well maybe that's what that means, maybe not
But as the long year draws to a close, Riku's lost his memories of Sora and is trying to deal with the "Ansem" in his heart again. After coming to Naminé and DiZ in an Organization coat, blindfolded, he learns that bringing Sora's Nobody back will make Sora wake up. But can he really fight and win against this boy that looks so much like Sora? Can be seen as Riku/Roxas.
16. Runaway Train - Soul Asylum
Can you help me remember how to smile?
Make it somehow all seem worthwhile
How on earth did I get so jaded?
Life's mystery seems so faded
I can go where no one else can go
I know what no one else knows

A little out of touch, a little insane
Riku loses in his fight against Roxas, and starts to ponder doing something he dreads doing. He has to weigh Sora against Roxas against himself. Is this Riku/Sora or Riku/Roxas? Maybe it's both.
17. Settle For Satin - Alkaline Trio
it's not so much a storm,
but just a cloud that lives inside of me
he doesn't stir so easily these days,
but when he wakes he goes the distance
in a marathon of days too long

that there is comfort in a world
where darkness is the only thing we see
and cold is all we have to breathe
where affectations keep us company,
where the lies we tell to the eyes that roll in doubt
are somehow out of our control
But in the end, there isn't really a question as to what Riku's going to do. And Riku chooses to use his dark power to defeat Roxas and help Sora wake up, losing his own physical form in the process. He takes on the form of the person he dislikes most in exchange, "Ansem", the person who reminds him most of his own failings in the past.
18. Lighthouse - The Hush Sound
There is a storm in the distance
The wind breathing warning of its imminence
There is a lighthouse five hundred yards down

Three ghosts in a lighthouse
While DiZ just laughs at him, Naminé is actually concerned for Riku and his well-being. Roxas gets put into Twilight Town, and Riku and Naminé wait for Sora to wake up. This one is sung by Naminé. Can be seen as Riku/Naminé.

Lonely and dreaming of the west coast
I don't want to be your downtime
I don't want to be your stupid game

Riku has been willing to help DiZ concerning Roxas and Sora, but he has to draw the line somewhere. He's not willing to participate in the revenge towards the Nobodies, and he's not willing to be cruel towards Naminé and Roxas. Even though he looks like "Ansem" now, it doesn't mean he has to act like it.
20. Angels Would Fall - Melissa Etheridge
And the doubts that have surrounded me
Are finding their way in

After Sora wakes up, Riku contents himself with helping here and there, but never revealing himself to Sora. Though Sora calls out to Riku on more than one occasion, Riku is ashamed by the things he's done and by his new appearance. Can be seen as Riku/Sora.
21. You Are The Moon - The Hush Sound

Emerging from the gentle grip of night's unfolding arms

In The World That Never Was, Riku fights off Saïx, so that Kairi and Naminé can go free. When he's going to leave the girls, Naminé stops him for Kairi. When he's going to leave Kairi and Sora, Kairi stops him to show Sora Riku's true form. Can be seen as both Riku/Naminé and Riku/Kairi.

Riku thought he didn't want to be found, but Sora is just so happy to see him that he breaks down in tears. Riku tries to tell Sora that he's done horrible things and has been lying to himself, but Sora just makes funny faces and refuses to let Riku mope about it. Even though it's one of the only Goo Goo Dolls songs I think of as sung to Riku rather than by him, I cannot say enough how much I like this song. Can be seen as Riku/Sora.

Finally back home in Destiny Islands, Riku is grateful for the friends he has, friends who never gave up on him and who are the most important people in the world to him. He knows that some bad things have happened in the past, but what's really important is the person he is now and the things he has learned. Can be seen as SoRiKai OT3.
