Terra + Riku FST: Carry You

So I was playing Birth By Sleep, fully expecting to be squicked by any and all mentions and scenes of Riku and Terra together. After all, darkness, badtouch, Xehanort, etc...
And then I got to the scene where they met, and there went that idea. I also started finding some really good songs, so that was how this FST came about.

You can view this as a pairing mix, or just as friendship, but there are going to be songs that have some shippy lyrics. This FST is for gold_panner@LJ, as it was her birthday recently (yes, I can dedicate this, too. hush) and she's one of the only other people who I think ships this.

A Terra+Riku FST

An introductory song. Riku and Terra meet and are instantly drawn to each other, but they won’t see each other again for at least ten years and a great number of battles.

Riku’s embarrassed regarding some of the things he’s done, especially before he finds out that he and Terra have more similarities that even he’d thought of. He wonders what Terra’s reaction will be to his struggles, with both the darkness and how long it took him to finally get his own keyblade.

Of course, Terra is just glad that there’s someone who knows what’s happened and is willing to talk. The change in Riku from a peaceful, understanding little boy to a serious, somewhat sharper young man is almost shocking, though. It angers Terra to find out that Riku had to go through those things, and he might also feel a little guilty and wonder if he inadvertently helped Riku start down the same path as him. He directs all this confused energy at trying to get Riku to realize that he can still be like the boy Terra had met before.

Seeing but not quite believing you
Riku knows what Terra is trying to tell him, and appreciates the sentiment, but the forceful approach isn’t going to be as effective in all circumstances. Sometimes it just takes a while for people to get to know each other again and reconcile what has happened to them over the years.

Terra himself has changed a little over the years, too. It doesn’t sink in right away, as Terra is more overwhelmed with just being free from the control of the last ten years, but in his interest in Riku, Terra slowly comes to realize just why Riku is a little more cautious and too mature for his age.

The candle burned out and we stumbled around in the dark

The band keeps on playing the world keeps revolving
Around all the static, the noise in between
Time passes on by and the way we love changes

New walls new ladders, none of this matters

And Riku is right there to help Terra sort through everything that’s happened. He helps Terra the most when he just acts on instinct because he’s been on the receiving end and knows just how much better things are when there’s someone to tell you, No, you’re not alone.

What Riku struggles with, a little, is when he over-thinks or doesn’t view himself as being as capable of helping Terra as the others. He’s not Sora, who goes around saving everyone, and he’s not Aqua and Ven, who have known Terra for a lot longer. What Riku really wants confirmation of is that what he’s doing is helping Terra, even if it’s a little bit.

The methods or reasoning behind what Riku does to try to help Terra might not be very conventional, but Terra’s support of Riku hasn’t exactly been conventional itself, either. The important thing, though, is that they’re both working to interact with each other again, to connect again now that the events of the past ten years are behind them, maybe not with Riku as Terra’s protégé as might have originally been intended when they first met, but as friends and something closer to equals.

Even though Riku and Terra have made the conscious decision to support each other, there are still some very serious topics that they need to discuss, some of the most prominent being the Darkness and Xehanort, what was intended or not intended regarding those subjects, and their final opinions about all of it.

She hid around corners and she hid under beds

Struck from a great height
By someone who should know better than that
Riku makes an effort to put the past behind him, and while he’s not always clear in explaining his thoughts about this to Terra, he is very serious about trying to move on. He’s also not always clear in explaining his thoughts regarding use of the darkness and light, either, but it doesn’t mean he stops trying to find ways to help Terra understand his philosophies.

Of course, there are the few unfortunate times when Riku is too cautious or Terra misinterprets an unspoken response and is too forward or some otherwise normal day gets bumped off its tracks, and Riku forgets that it’s not Terra looks like Xehanort but instead Xehanort stole Terra’s body just like he stole mine, and not If you told anyone they’d think you were strange and there was something wrong with you but Keep this a secret because it’s special and just between us. It’s not intentional, but reflexes Riku had previously used to keep himself protected are at times counterproductive to his interactions and relationship with Terra.

This sort of misunderstanding is understandably very hurtful to Terra, and makes him stop and need a few moments to collect himself, almost as much as Riku needs moments to rearrange his thinking and then fix the damage he’s caused.

When Riku realizes that he’s hurt Terra with his reactions, Riku makes the conscious effort to move past them because to him, Terra in the present is more important than whatever’s gone on in the past.

Eventually, both Riku and Terra realize that while neither of them are pristine, it doesn’t mean they’re not still good people. They’ve made it this far, so that means they can deal with the things that need to be resolved on their own individually and sort out some of the rest together.

It’s been so long since they first met, and they’ve both gone through a lot of hurt and uncertainty since then, but…

…both Riku and Terra are glad that they’ve gotten to know each other, not just once as the people they were ten years ago, but for real and for good. It might not be what most people would expect, but it’s what feels right for both of them.

When Riku realizes that he’s hurt Terra with his reactions, Riku makes the conscious effort to move past them because to him, Terra in the present is more important than whatever’s gone on in the past.

Eventually, both Riku and Terra realize that while neither of them are pristine, it doesn’t mean they’re not still good people. They’ve made it this far, so that means they can deal with the things that need to be resolved on their own individually and sort out some of the rest together.
